The delivery can be controlled, genuine and authoritative, fast and edgy, building tension or deliberately over the top for comedy.
I was contacted to voice a set of sponsorship bumpers for Sky Sports News and Grosvenor Casinos. The campaign needed several distinct commentator styles across football, golf, tennis, cricket and Formula 1, all delivered with the pace and character of a sports broadcast.
I was contacted by Cadbury, who wanted that climactic, excitable and over the top commentator style that you hear when a goal has just been scored. These reads are always fun to record, as I get to yell, scream and bring out my inner Peter Drury, Guy Mowbray and John Champion!
I had the honour of voicing the 118 118 TV adverts, featuring “the men with moustaches!” They wanted a comedic, tongue-in-cheek style as the guys played a variety of sports.
In this example, they really wanted to hear intensity, as if the play was building. The brief was to start slowly, commentating on the events unfolding, before reaching a climax. Pity it featured Arsenal!
This is a promo for Dugout FC, a game played on iPhone and Android.
The brief was an edgy, punchy commentator-style delivery.
Alongside football commentary, I also record sports commentator voiceovers for golf, horse racing, tennis, cricket, Formula 1 and other sports. This includes a calm, whispered golf commentator in the style of Peter Alliss, an excited horse racing voice in the style of Sir Peter O’Sullevan and high energy Formula 1 commentary in the style of Murray Walker. The delivery can be authentic and controlled, promotional, characterful or deliberately heightened for comedy.
It was a lot of fun filming this advert for Amazon Prime as the sports commentator, featuring
Dina Asher-Smith and Zharnel Hughes.
This advert for SPAR was a finalist at the 2021 VOX Awards. It’s an in-store commercial for Budweiser beer that really builds to an incredible finish!
I love voicing scripts in a classic horse racing commentator voice. These start conversationally and build to an incredible climax. Enjoy!
