Need a classic British horse racing commentator voice for an advert, promo, web video or comedy script? I’m Darren Altman, a professional British voiceover artist, sports commentator-style performer and celebrity impressionist, recording from my broadcast quality London studio.
I can deliver a controlled, traditional racing voice that builds from the opening stages into the speed, tension and full-on excitement of the final furlong! The performance can include a Peter O’Sullevan-style flavour where suitable and I’m happy to work with you to ensure that you get the exact style and tone you require.
These examples show how a horse racing commentary voice can bring pace, drama and humour to a commercial script.
The first is a retail campaign for Budweiser which was a finalist at the 2021 VOX Awards. The commentary begins in a controlled style before building towards a full racing finish.
This second clip is an in-store Easter promotion for Cadbury, using the rhythm and excitement of a horse race to turn a retail message into something more entertaining. It has a Peter O’Sullevan-style flavour and builds throughout to a climactic finish.
Traditional British horse racing commentary is all about pacing. The opening can be calm and descriptive, before the rhythm tightens as the field turns for home and the excitement builds towards the finishing line.
I shape the performance around the script, product names and exact timing, so the climax feels natural rather than simply shouted. The voice can be warm and authoritative, dry and understated, fast and dramatic or deliberately heightened for comedy.
A Peter O’Sullevan-style vocal impression can add the flavour of classic British racing coverage, without presenting the recording as the real, official or endorsed voice.
This commentary style works well for radio adverts, TV promos, betting adverts, sports campaigns, web videos, corporate videos, animation, character voice work and mock race commentary for events or branded content.
I can create a Grand National-style or Cheltenham-style build for a scripted commercial or comedy piece, without suggesting any official connection to those events. Products, guests, colleagues or fictional horses can also be worked into a bespoke race script, building towards a clear final line, announcement or punchline.
All voiceovers are recorded from my broadcast quality studio using a Neumann U87 microphone. You can direct the session live over Source-Connect, Cleanfeed, Zoom or Teams, or send me the script and receive clean, fully edited audio ready for production.
A short bespoke demo is available where useful. I can also help with timing, alternative lines and small script adjustments to make the commentary flow naturally and fit the required duration.
